HARRY POTTER Books Banned from Library

St. Edward Catholic School in Nashville, TN recently opened a new library for the 2019-2020 school year; however, something was missing on the first day of school. The fantasy series by J.K. Rowling that chronicles the adventures of the young wizard, Harry Potter, and his friends were removed when the school moved into to the new library. Due to their inclusion of objectionable content, students will no longer be able to check out Harry Potter books from the school’s library.

The decision to remove the books came after Rev. Dan Reehill, the pastor of the church associated with the school consulted with several exorcists who recommended removing the books. In an email to parents, Rev. Reehill said the following on the books’ removal:

These books present magic as both good and evil, which is not true, but in fact a clever deception. The curses and spells used in the books are actual curses and spells; which when read by a human being risk conjuring evil spirits into the presence of the person reading the text.

According to a diocese spokesperson, the Catholic Church does not have an official position on the series; however, but the school’s pastor has the final say about its inclusion in the library.

The core Harry Potter books, published between 1997 and 2007, were written by J.K. Rowling. They have spurred a successful movie franchise, additional books and movies, theme parks, and a huge worldwide following.
