Len Wein, Co-creator of Wolverine and Swamp Thing, Dies at 69

Len Wein, the award-winning comic book writer and editor, best known for co-creating DC Comics’ Swamp Thing and Marvel Comics’ Wolverine, passed away on Sunday at the age of 69.

During his time at Marvel, Wein joined forces with artists John Romita Sr. and Herb Trimpe to create Wolverine who made his first appearance in The Incredible Hulk #180. He also helped to revive the X-Men franchise in 1975 with artist Dave Cockrum when he introduced a new lineup that included not only Wolverine, but also classic characters such as Nightcrawler, Storm, and Colossus.

While working with DC Comics, Wein teamed with Bernie Wrightson to create Swamp Thing who debuted in The House of Secrets #92. He also created Batman‘s Lucius Fox and worked as editor on New Teen Titans, Batman and the Outsiders, All-Star Squadron, and Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ classic, Watchmen.

Wein was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards’ Hall of Fame in 2008.
