Summer Rental – MMU 60

In this episode, Tracy, Val, and Jake discuss the 1980s comedy classic Summer Rental starring John Candy. In the same vein as the National Lampoons Vacation movies, this is a comedy about a family as it could only be done in the 80s. Who wouldn’t want a nice, relaxing stay in a beach house in Citrus Cove, Florida? But you know everything is going to go wrong…
John Candy is brilliant in this film, and just oozes charisma as he always does. The team discusses how this role may differ from some of his other work, like Uncle Buck. His character has just a little more heart. But as always, John Candy really is genuine as the dad here who just wants two help his family have an unforgettable summer vacation.
Sure, the story may be full of holes, and the pacing is a little weird, but overall, the laughs are there and the film has heart in the end. This was a classic that Tracy and Val grew up watching, but it was new for Jake. It is definitely worth checking out.
