#whatblackpanthermeanstome, Equality

From #Kony2012 to #icebucketchallenge hashtag activism has started to play a huge role in social media. There has been no better movie to continue this trend than with “Black Panther” which makes its movie theater debut tonight at 7 pm.

You would have to be unaware of all social injustices happening in the world to believe this is just another useless trend like #CareerEndingTwitterTypos or, dare I say, #GeekPickUpLines. (To that one’s credit, however, that just saved one geek at a time.) #WhatBlackPantherMeansToMe is taking the world by storm, and for good reason. It has been near impossible up until this year to find movies starring a character that is smart, funny, well-educated, strong, a great role model and also black. We can’t shy away from that point. Hollywood, and America, has had a horrible history with portraying people of color in a typecast role. You have gangsters, or hooligans, or criminals, or people you are subconsciously told to avoid on the street. “Black Panther” is going to break those molds and give people of color representation that anyone deserves.

The crazy thing is that Hollywood, the place known for being daring and progressive, has taken this long to get around to even beginning the right direction of the representation train. And people are still complaining that it’s happening! To all of those out there who are complaining about this movie, or the representation that it has, the only thing I have to say to you is: That train is coming around the corner so you might want to hop on quick. Maybe peruse the #WhatBlackPantherMeansToMe tag and calm yourself right on down.  And for all of you using the #WhatBlackPantherMeansToMe tag to perpetuate your ideas that this movie only “wants nothing to do with white people”, maybe go back and check your history books. Or comic books. Or any book. Maybe just pick up a book.

Let’s start giving all walks of live equal, accurate, and fair representation. “Black Panther” will, and SHOULD be a battle cry for equality.
